Busy weekend - Round Up

Busy weekend - Round Up

Chris Wright20 Nov 2023 - 15:28

Fantastic junior performances from the young Wasps.

1st team
Consett 57 Cockermouth 19

As the first team continue to be hampered by front row unavailability they again travelled and left everything on the pitch.

As per previous games, it wasn’t Consett who earned the right to get on the front foot but 2 costly mistakes from the away side, let Consett on the front foot. Firstly a knock on from kick off and then the restart put out on the full.

14-0 down, early on on the game is never good and the Wasps side didn’t recover from this. Heading into half time very disappointed to be 33-0 down. However captain James Hunter worked hard during the half time break to change the mindset and spur the lads on to enjoy the 2nd half. Three tries, much more energy and completion from the team, ensured a more competitive game took place. With Wasps cruelly having a bonus 4th try disallowed and Consett scoring in the last play of the game. The Wasps lads should again take confidence from the 24-19 2nd half score line. As we approach the half way of the season, the hard work, learning, building of the squad continues and we look forward to the second half of the season.

Colts

Our colts welcomed unbeaten Billingham on Sunday for what was to be their toughest test of the season to date. The game didn’t disappoint and was physical from the start with both sides determined to gain the ascendancy. After withstanding some sustained pressure from Billingham early, it was the home side that got the first try on the board.
Some brutal defence from cockermouth turned the game in their favour and two more first half tries followed for Wasps to go in to half time with a healthy 19-0 lead.
Billingham made a host of changes at half time in an attempt to get back into the game and looked stronger in the second half. However, despite having a glut of possession and the home side being reduced to 14 men twice for ruck infringements, Cockermouth’s defence was able to limit the visitors to just two second half tries. Fulltime score 19-12.
A great win for the home side in a fiercely contested game between two strong sides.

Ospreys

U16s - County Cup - Semi Final

Penrith 12 - 38 Ospreys

A tense first half despite us coming in 17-0 ahead, Penrith competing very well up front being well drilled and physical.

When we settled on the ball and played the way we do, and avoided getting drawn into a battle up front, we managed to get our backs over the line at the edges.

That’s not to say our towards didn’t stamp their mark, try of the match (in my opinion!) going to one of our second row kicking a grubber on Penriths 22 and then pushing the full back who’d gathered in goal before ripping the ball and dabbing down.

A few work ons, particularly around the area of the ruck which was a little hectic at times, but overall a fantastic performance, we play old sparring partners Wigton in the final at a time and place place tbc.

Cockermouth U15s

Cockermouth u15s hosted Carlisle on the unconventional counters of “the hump”. Both teams started off scrappily. Carlisle big forwards put Cockermouth under pressure on at the scrum, and when driving forwards with ball in hand. Carlisle’s line speed in defence put Cockermouth under pressure especially when the ball come off the top at the lineout.
Cockermouth worked harder at the breakdown, and improved in the scrum and looked more dangerous when the ball was kept away from the arm wrestle and moved to the edges. This lead to a try for Rhys in the first half.
The powerful Carlisle forwards proving decisive in the end and scored two tries in each half. Leading to a 22-5 victory for Carlisle.
Pleasing aspects the players worked hard through to the end and looked to adapt to both regular fly half’s in the squad being injured (before game and during the game).
Also seeing Ethan and Paddy get their first appearances for the team.
Areas to work on - support play, body position at breakdown and variations at the lineout.
Thanks to Robbie Skeleton for refereeing, Stephen Reed for marking out the pitch and all the volunteers running the kitchen.

Cockermouth u13s/14s

U13/u14s travelled to Egremont this morning. The lads had an excellent game and were dominant for long periods of the game. We've been working hard on the breakdown recently especially being more physical. Me and Dickie were both really pleased how well the lads performed in that area today ?
We created so many opportunities to score more tries but conditions played a part with too many handling errors. Not sure how we didn't win the game comfortably but performance wise a vast improvement.
Final score Egremont 19 Cockermouth 19.
