One of the clubs longest serving players Thomas Peet was named as club captain recently. I caught up with him to find out his ambitions for the club and how he thought the senior teams would fare this season.

What does it mean to you to be named club captain for this season?

I have a lot of pride in being named club captain. Working my way through the club youth system, seeing the highs and lows of where the club has been and to be part of the group that are now putting the club back in the good and enjoyable times is something special. This is something our first and second team and newly formed colts captains can be proud of.

What are your ambitions for the club this season?

This session I hope the club can push on from a fantastic learning experience last year for many of the players and the committee and we can take that experience and use it this season to have a great crack at the whip.

Where would you like to see the club in 5 years time?

The senior teams are a great example of what Cockermouth rugby club can do. With our fantastic youth set up we find ourselves producing our own quality players and a few for other clubs too. With the newly set up colts team now in place, rugby at the club is constantly improving. If the club stays on the track it’s on now, I can't see why this club won’t just keep on improving over the coming years.

Predictions for the first and second team this season?

This year in Cumbria 1 there are so many good rugby teams. Every team has the ability to pull something out of the bag on the day and nobody is a write off. There’s been some pre-season games that have produced some interesting results, and that just show what a hard- fought league this will be. I feel Cockermouth have a strong chance up the top end of the league but it’s going to be a hard year. As for the second team this year, they have a fantastic opportunity to go out and play some good rugby. With the prospect of regular games it should keep a good strong team interested.

The club relies heavily on volunteers to keep it running throughout the year. What's your message for anyone thinking of volunteering at the club?

This club would be nothing without its volunteers and it has a great hard working core at the moment. However, there’s always room for more volunteers to come in and share some knowledge or just lend a hand around the club.
