Whitehaven edged past determined a determined Cockermouth team with two fine tries in the opening period of the second half. The game was a physical battle with both teams putting in some massive tackles, unfortunately a number were deemed to be to high and resulting in Cockermouth having one player sin binned and Whitehaven two.
The opening 20 mins was the best period for the home side with the mobile Cockermouth team pressuring Whitehaven when defending into many mistakes and controlling the ball well in attack. On eight minutes the Cockermouth pack got on top at a 5m scrum and pushed Whitehaven over the line for No7 Sam Wilson to score, conversion was just wide from No 10 Mark Watson. Based on this dominance Cockermouth decided to kick their next two penalties to the corner to try and set up driving mauls but unfortunately wasted the opportunities with one penalty for offside in the set up of the maul and another for the line out jumper coming inside the 5m channel. At this point Whitehaven found their A game and started to dominate possession with excellent driving plays from their pack supported by line breaking runs from outside centre Jay Rossi. This pressure eventually paid of with Jordan Thomson scoring in the corner. The Cockermouth team remained on the back foot for the rest of the half not using possession well enough and turning over lots of ball. How ever their determined defence stopped any more tries being scored and Whitehaven goal kicker,Steven McConnell opted to kick two penalties which were missed, 5-5 half time.
The second half started similar to the first half ending with Whitehaven dominating the game in attack and the Cockermouth side unable to sue there possession to break down and pressure the Whitehaven defence. The difference being the effort from the first half was now starting to show and Whitehaven were finding space at the edges. Sam Hamand was the next try scorer for Whitehaven after supporting well up the middle of the park after Rossi made a telling break down the right hand side and scored under the posts for an easy conversion for McConnell. The next phases of play would be critical in the final result, Cockermouth found good field position and Mark Watson made a great break into the 10m line and with Conor Bannard on his shoulder ready to score, but unfortunately the pass wasnt made and the ball was turned over, with Bannard making the next tackle which would have been seen has an good tackle on the ball before the new law changes received a yellow card. This period halted the Cockermouth attack and Whitehaven made another great break with the ball interchanged between the backs and Jordan Thomson got his second, converted by McConnell. The final 5 mins of the game was to be Cockermouth's firstly getting another push over try led well up front from man of the Match Adam Brough and finished by Andrew Branthwaite. From the kick off Cockermouth tried their best to get back up the field to secure a losing bonus point but the determined Whitehaven side made sure the final result would be 10-19.
