Physical game with blown chances costly

Workington take their only two scoring opportunities to win game

Cockermouth entered the game knowing they had to take Workington Zebras big and experienced pack on up front while playing their expansive game plan. The front five of Adam Brough, James Hunter, Dan Martin, Ryan Hetherington and Stef Highton did more than take the zebras pack on they dominated it. On the back of this the rest of the Cockermouth team were excellent in defence and withstood Workingtons early dominance to stop all their attacks and frustrate the Workington team. Strong running from Adam Brough, excellent driving mauls and scrums brought the away side back into the game, however the expansive game plan needed and the use of Jonny Ostle at 12 wasn't being implemented. John Irving the young full back who was looking sharp was brought of after 20min with a knee injury and this was further hampered when stand off Mark Watson was taken off the field by a nasty blow to the nose at a bottom of a ruck. The Zebras player involved was given a yellow card for this. During this period the Zebras team lost their structure and Cockermouth reaped the rewards with an excellent turn over which went across the back line and Nathaniel May scored in the corner.
Cockermouth needed to score more in this period and James Sewell was unlucky as he carried well at the try line, but unfortunately no further points were added and when the Zebras were back to 15men with 10mins to play they found their game with a lot more pace and direction on their go forward and the tempo was raised. The first try scoring opportunity of the half was taken well be the zebras, but with no conversion the half time score was 5-5.

The second half continued to be a huge battle with both teams enjoying the contact and some excellent defence on show, the hard working Paul Greening was stopping a lot of the Zebras carries. The attack wasnt quite happening to the favour of the away side but with two forwards in the back line they were still looking dangerous and likely to score if they kept their composure and took advantage of the space being opened up. Unfortunately the visits into the Zebras 22 were not clinical enough and rugby can be harsh game as the young Cockermouth team found out when Zebras put up a high kick which was not cleanly collected and as the ball bounced up for Zebra forward Shaun Murphy to gallop 40 yards to score under posts against run of play. 12-5

The away side who have a great work ethic certainly didnt give up and bounced back with more strong runs from Adam Brough, James Sewell and Sam Wilson. Firstly Wilson found space from a pick up at the ruck and was tackled just short but support from his pack got him over the line but the referee gave a penalty for double movement. Next came an opening down the right outside channel but a knock on from Jonny Ostle just as he was starting to have big impact on the game meant another chance went missed. Finally as the instructions were been given to the Cockemrouth players that time was running out an excellent back line move from Ostle and Wilson open up full back Harry Oates down the left hand side edge and with speed machine Nathniel May outside a simple draw and pass would have at least earned a draw but a communication mix up meant the ball was dropped and from the resulting ruck Zebras cleared to touch on the final whistle. Much to the delight of the Zebras team and frustration of the away side that another big game ended in defeat. Cockermouth MOM was James Hunter.
